Founded in 495 A.D., Shaolin Temple is globally known for its Zen Buddhism and martial arts. The birth of Zen Buddhism can be traced back to the third year of Xiaochang(527 AD), the Northern Wei Dynasty, when an eminent monk, named Bodhidharma, who traveled from India to China to deliver the message of Zen. Remarkably, early 1980s bore witness to it that the movie The Shaolin Templemade a hit, with a result that the Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Kung Fu have since enjoyed popularity across the world. China‘s Largest Ancient Pagoda Complex

Pagoda Forest is home to pagoda tombs of eminent monks in history. It is the resting place of Shaolin’s forebears. With a total area of 21,000 square meters, it is the largest ancient pagoda complex, with the highest number of pagodas. This area houses 248 pagodas made of bricks, stones or both, hence renowned as Museum of Old Pagoda.

The Ashram of Patriarch Bodhidharma

The Chuzu Convent was built in 1125 A.D. in the honor of Patriarch Bodhidharma, founder of Zen Buddhism. Today, the monastery consists of a hall of worship, two pavilions and a thousand-Buddha tower. It has the typical characteristic of the Song Dynasty style. Bodhidharma Cave is a natural rock niche; it is measuring 7 meters in depth and over 3 meters in height, where Patriarch Bodhidharma, founder of Zen Buddhism, meditated for nine years. According to legend which Bodhidharma had created the Eight trigrams boxing (Baduanjin) and muscle-bone strengthening exercise (Yijinjing).

Founded in 1978, the college has 23 largesize practice rooms. It offers various martial arts courses including routine training, one-on-one fighting, boxing, performance of martial arts and Tai Chi. Presently, 718 classes of martial arts teaching are underway at the college. In more than 40 years of its establishment, it has imparted civil and military training to more than 100,000 people. Shaolin – A Grand Ritual of Zen Buddhist Music has been adapted from Shaolin’s patrimony of Buddhist music by Chinese musicians and contemporary artists, including Mr. Tan Dun. It is the world’s biggest live show on a mountainous terrain. It features grand audio-visual performances, involving the passionate playing of 88 Zhengs (a stringed musical instrument) and around 600 Kungfu practitioners. The show presents changing seasons in the backdrop of inspiring Buddhist music. The audiovisual feast shapes into a splendid symphony echoing at Songshan Mountain.

The Cradle of Tai Chi

As the birthplace and hometown of Tai Chi, Chenjiagou is considered a holy site by Tai Chi practitioners and enthusiasts from around the world. Over 300 years have passed since the introduction of Tai Chi by Chen Wangting (1600—1680), a patriarch of the ninth generation of the Chens. Tai Chi has been passed down from generation to generation to Chenjiagou locals who practice it in their everyday lives, with many of them emerging as masters of this incredible form of martial arts. Tai Chi practitioners from Chenjiagou have won numerous prizes and championships at major national martial arts competitions and many of them are teaching Tai Chi overseas, which helps spread the fame of Chenjiagou and Chen-style Tai Chi.

Tai Chi Museum is housed in Tai Chi Pavilion, a neoclassical building situated on a high octagonal platform. The museum boasts close to 10,000 artifacts and historical documents related to Tai Chi, including the genealogy of masters of major Tai Chi schools. It consists of the Liangyi (Two Forms) Hall, the Sixiang (Four Emblems) Hall, the Wenxiu Hall (the Hall of Learning) and the Sanxing Hall (the Hall of Reflection), where the evolution, fundamental laws, movements and culture of Tai Chi are on display.

Tai Chi Ancestral Hall comprises Hall of Worship, Ancestral Grove and the Garden of Tai Chi Culture. The Ancestral Hall is dedicated to the promotion of Tai Chi culture and its masters. This hall has been expanded by the government from a memorial that was built by the Chens in honor of their masters. Tai Chi practitioners can pay tribute to these masters at the Ancestral Hall and enjoy a tour of its exhibitions, including the introduction of Tai Chi by Chen Wangting, the evolution of various Tai Chi schools and the profiles of Tai Chi masters.

Tai Chi School is a base of orthodox Tai Chi Learning, the first of its kind in China.
