A Representative of Ancient Architecture of the Central Plains

Covering an area of 160,000 square meters, the mansions were built by the Kang Family. Its construction began in the middle period of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It has witnessed the rise and fall of the Kang Family over a history of more than 400 years. It faces the Luo River, with its back against Mangshan Mountain. Complementing the mansions, cave dwellings were built near the mountain along with storied buildings near the street, a wharf near the river and a bulwark in the dangerous area. It is typical feudal fortress architecture, remnant of the feudal times when such mansions used to be an integrated hub for agriculture, politics and commerce.

Dikengyuan is a kind of residential area with unique characteristics on the Loess Plateau of China, which materially demonstrates the evolution of mankind’s cave dwellings. It is quite durable, cool in summer and warm in winter. When people come here, they will see trees but not the village, and later the village but not the houses. Tourists can hear the sounds but can hardly see the villagers. Such a unique characteristic of this residential area is praised with expressions such as “the living fossil of mankind’s cave dwelling” and “the ancient village below the horizon”. The uniqueness, specialty, simplicity and truthfulness of Dikengyuan have helped attract a great number of Chinese and foreign tourists. Built in the early 20th century, this manor belonged to Ma Piyao, a minister in the late Qing Dynasty. Its constructed area is more than 5,000 square meters, called by some scholars as “Peerless Architecture Sample of Feudal Official Residences in the Central Plains” and “No. 1 Large Residence in the Central Plains”. The entire manor’s layout is rigorous and orderly yet simple and elegant. It has witnessed the evolution of modern Chinese history in the past century.

Located in Henan Province, these unique residential buildings have been made using local materials, including large and small stones for the walls and thin stone slates for the roof. These slate houses are warm in winter and cool in summer. Most parts of the villages in Shiban Township, Linzhou are home to such slate houses. Nestled in greenery, these uniform houses look distinct. They are truly a wonder in Henan’s folk dwellings.
